International Students in the USA

The top ten countries with the most international students in the United States, based on research from Open Doors released in November 2005, are as follows:

  1. India: 80,466 (up 1% from the previous year)
  2. China: 62,523 (up 1%)
  3. Korea: 53,358 (up 2%)
  4. Japan: 42,215 (up 3%)
  5. Canada: 28,140 (up 4%)
  6. Taiwan: 25,914 (down 1%)
  7. Mexico: 13,063 (down 2%)
  8. Turkey: 12,474 (up 9%)
  9. Germany: 8,640 (down 1%)
  10. Thailand: 8,637 (down 3%)

The majority (58%) of all international students come from Asia. The 75,032 international students in California make that state the leading host, followed by New York (61,944), Texas (47,367), Massachusetts (27,985), and Florida (26,264).

The University of Southern California,with 6,846 international students, led the charge, followed by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Texas at Austin, Columbia (New York) and New York University.
